The Last Drink In The Last Chance Saloon

It is roughly seventeen months since this project started. Despite all of the revelations from this blog, and from other ‘new media’ outlets, little has changed in the world of Scottish football. This might seem a strange claim given that the largest football club in the country has become insolvent and now sits on corporate death-row awaiting its execution. However, the major institutions that feed on the blood of Scottish football fans: the SFA; the SPL; and the newspapers- appear to have learned little from events in this time.

They still believe that the people who pay their wages are imbeciles. They still dish out fatuous lies and peddle disinformation as if Sir David Murray was still in his heyday. The hysterical exaggerations and tales of impending financial doom should be transparent to the businessmen who fill most of the Chairman roles at Scottish football clubs. Anyone with even a few minutes of business experience will see through the lies of the Scottish football establishment. These scare stories are not the issue. It is the dangling of long requested changes in the structure of the Scottish game that will present clubs from both the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League with a dilemma.

From their public statements, it is clear that the driving forces behind this attempt at league-rigging are SFA Chief Executive Stewart Regan and SPL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster. Despite being paid to promote the Scottish game, they have spent recent weeks trying to convince advertisers and TV companies that their product is worthless without someone representing Rangers’ legacy playing in the SFL1 next season. It is as if Sevco Ltd was a panacea and that this new club will be guaranteed promotion to the SPL within a single season.

Let us be in no doubt. Scottish football faces a period of turmoil and some financial belt-tightening regardless of what happens in any of the upcoming votes. (If Servco Ltd are forced to start in SFL3, the nattering nabobs of the mainstream Scottish sports press will doubtless blame every player transfer and setback on ‘internet bampots’ and shortsighted fans of so-called ‘diddy teams’). The Scottish game became unsustainable and unhealthily unbalanced towards just two clubs. In an era when it is easy to watch the best football from every country all week long, we need to extract the cancers that have been devouring our game for over twenty years rather than battling to preserve them. Among the assorted symptoms of the illness facing our game are:

  • Scottish football has failed to develop a single stand-out talent since the early 1980s
  • Scottish football has been spending more than it takes in for far too long
  • Scottish football has fallen far behind global standards in the quality of entertainment it offers

Scottish football had become dull and uninteresting for all but the fans of the two clubs that could entertain thoughts of ever winning the league.

There is a now a golden opportunity for creative minds to remake the game. Instead, we have intellectual pygmies telling us that everything in Scottish football is fantastic and must be saved at all costs. What is worth saving? Declining attendances? A terrible set of TV contracts that do not realise the full value of the Scottish game? A national team that cannot qualify for any international competitions? We have a game that is viewed with universal contempt for both its lack of technical quality and the lopsidedness of its top division. This is where our game finds itself almost three decades after the “Souness Revolution” started at Rangers. The false economies started by David Holmes, and placed on steroids by David Murray, eventually devastated all around it. Rangers embodied the ideas that financial might made right and reckless spending was the key to success. Their demise should be a cautionary tale to others to get their house in order. Instead, the Scottish football establishment wants to send the signal that if you are going to fail, make sure you do it on a spectacular scale: we will make everyone else carry you if it goes wrong.

Mr. Doncaster trained as a lawyer and has an MBA. If Scottish football was a case study at a business school, anyone submitting a paper that recommended crushing the last remnants of fairness in the game to prop up a failed old-order would not get a passing mark. Doncaster in particular is failing. (Funny that Messers Doncaster & Regan find it so easy to predict the effects of Sevco Ltd playing in SFL3, but could not use these same skills to anticipate Rangers’ implosion. Even when the aforementioned ‘internet bampots’ had warned years earlier of a crisis brewing at Ibrox, the men with the crystal ball today were unable to see something that was so obvious). When the dust settles on this disaster one way or another, one can only hope that Doncaster and Regan have absented themselves. It is clear that they lack the imaginations required to improve our game. Our hopes for restoring the thrill of Scottish football now rests on the men who run the clubs in the SPL and the SFL. We must hope that they have the backbone to stand-up to being bullied and the foresight to realise that all that is being dangled by Regan & Doncaster can be obtained anyway- without sacrificing the game and without the hired hands for whom this all appears to be just a job.

If fairness fails and Sevco Ltd is able to field a team in the SFL1 next season, it is for each fan to make an individual decision on whether it is worth returning to watch a game played with loaded dice. For those who do decide to go back (I am still undecided), something will still be missing in the game. An unfillable void will have opened. The men who will vote on this decision have to realise that they are not just voting on short-term revenues. They are going to irreparably alter the Scottish game whatever happens. Money will ebb and flow in football in proportion to the excitement and quality of the competition. If fans believe that there is no competition because a winner is preordained, money will leave and it will stay gone.

I go to watch as many Scotland games as possible both home and away.

I will not go to any more home friendlies, I would have normally been a stick on to go to Easter Road to watch the Australia game.

I haven’t bought a ‘season’ ticket for the WC qualifiers as the SFA don’t deserve an of my money up front and gathering interest in their bank account. I will grudgingly and with a heavy heart attend the competitive home games. I will continue to go to away games to support the team as the SFA wont benefit from it.

I will also refrain from purchasing any SFA branded merchandise and not wear any said merchandise. I know another couple of people in the same position.

Its not really much of a protest or a boycott but there isn’t much else I can do. The money i would have normally spent on travel and a ticket to the australia game will be spent on my Club via attending friendlies and buying a replica shirt that I normally wouldn’t purchase.

In recent years Scotland managers seem to fall into 2 categories, people who have won nothing or people who use it as a vehicle for their own careers. Its about not getting beat rather than trying to win and we all know that when you back off a football team and give them space they will look much better.

Scotland should never play with less than 2 strikers – how many times have we played with an isolated striker who has no chance of holding the ball up.

We may as well lose at least trying to win. As for Levein, he should have lost his job after the 4 6 0 debacle, a result that cost Scotland qualification in a winnable game. He is not going to lose his job when the SFA have no standards that they expect the team to live up to.

If, as reported on the BBC website, the SPL are holding out for a share of any media rights’ payments made to the SFL on the back of Sevco’s involvement, then they have reached a new low in morality.

They chose not to let them into their own wee club, attempted to bribe/blackmail the SFL into taking them into Div 1, leaving the SFL in a horrible position, and now they want a share of any money paid to the SFL?

The internecine war currently being waged puts all Scottish football governance to shame but this is madness.

Absolutely spot on Slim, I look back in anger to the same times and in the same circumstances as yourself.

Being bewildered and raging at the hoards as they showered abuse on certain players…and more than a couple of those players WERE world class, not today’s world class!

However times are changing, this blog, with thanks to RTC & the cone heads (did they play the Apollo?) is testament to that.

At 57 there will not be a level playing field in my lifetime but there certainly will be in my son’s and RTC’s book will be there for him as proof of our days.

How can the sfa apply a transfer ban :-

The sanctions of suspension or expulsion from the SFA were originally judged by the Judicial Tribunal to be too severe for the offence of bringing the game into disrepute, hence the punishment of a 12-month transfer embargo on signing players over the age of 18. However, since it was ruled by Lord Glennie in the Court of Session on Tuesday that the tribunal did not have the right to impose the signing ban because it was not one of the options prescribed by the SFA’s rules, it now falls to Lord Carloway and the appeals panel to select one of the four available sanctions.
Aside from suspension or expulsion, Rangers can be excluded from the Scottish Cup for an indefinite period and fined. The transfer ban came with a £100,000 fine because it was felt that that keeping Rangers out of the Scottish Cup was too light a consequence for the misdeeds committed during the tenure of Craig Whyte.
Now, though, anything is possible again and the Telegraph understands that the view in legal circles is that Lord Carloway has cause to incline to the view that since Rangers’ offences were towards the higher end of the scale, the punishment should be proportionate. Certainly, there is concern within the SFA that Rangers are now more likely, rather than less, to suffer sanctions which could see them effectively expelled from football.
The SFA are more confident of their own position with regard to Fifa’s disapproval of member clubs taking their national associations to court. They are able to cite Scots Law in respect of the Court of Session being a supervisory body which cannot be sidestepped. However, that presents the SFA with a further difficulty, namely, that although they can appeal against Lord Glennie’s judgement, Scotland’s national association would then be seen to revert to legal action against a club – and there could be no guarantee that they would win.

I support my country, but from the comfort of my own armchair.

I wouldn’t pay a penny to watch Scotland today, I spent too many evenings in the late 60s, the 70s and early 80s, getting soaked on the terraces of Hampden while listening to the “home” crowd, under the protection of a nice big protective roof on the west terracing, hurl abuse at several players from my team.

Johnstone, McNeill, Hay, Macari, McGrain (moved to left back to accommodate Jardine) and, worst of all, Dalglish, whose treatment improved only marginally after his transfer to Liverpool in 1977 – all suffered from their own “fans”.

The SFA has never really made the effort to be all-inclusive, and some things will never change, at least as long as CO is its president.

People and life moves on – entrenched views are views of the past not the future. Northern Ireland would not have limped forward if people had not been willing to forget or move on from the past.

I find Scotland games the one place where the majority of people show a love of the country above all else. We have idiotic Scottish Celtic fans who prefer ireland and idiotic Scottish Rangers fans who think the British empire still exists.

move on, nobody is interested in outdated entrenched views, those people are part of the problem.

  16. Torrevieja Johnbhoy says:

ALLY McCOIST has come out strongly in relation to proposed sanctions against Rangers which are being demanded over the club’s membership of the SFA.

The manager is unhappy that the SFA released a statement last night when an agreement had not been reached.

He contends that a signing ban is not an appropriate action and he has vowed that he will contest vigorously any attempt to strip Rangers of any titles.

McCoist had hoped to lead his depleted squad into action in friendlies in the coming days but the lack of SFA membership has prevented him from doing so.

The manager said today: “I am extremely disappointed that the SFA chose to release a statement last night when the Club has not actually signed any agreement.

“The club is trying to get to a position where we can plan for the season, which starts in only eight days.

“We have had meetings with the SFA all week to discuss membership but I had to leave the final meeting as I could not support the sanctions they were trying to impose.

“The decision has already been taken to place Rangers in Division 3 and we have accepted that, along with many more punishments. However, operating with an embargo on an already depleted first team squad – even with a window to sign players – will make the task ahead an extremely difficult one.

“It is important to remember we have already had a 10 point deduction from the SPL, lost our Champions League place for finishing second last season, had a £160,000 fine, been refused entry to the SPL, been relegated to Division 3 and lost the majority of our first team squad – yet still the governing body has chosen to impose further sanctions.

“The transfer ban has been strongly resisted by me, the management team, the Directors and supporters. Indeed The Rangers Fans Fighting Fund appointed a QC to defend the Club’s position as the sanction was not available to the Appellate Tribunal.

“From a business point of view I can understand the position the Board has been placed in and ultimately they felt they had no choice but to accept some sanctions in order to move forward – as one of the alternatives could have led to the extinction of the Club.

“The Rangers fans have been magnificent throughout this entire process and on behalf of everyone at the Club I would like to thank them once again for their loyalty.

“I can also assure every Rangers fan I will not be accepting any talk of stripping the Club of titles. That is something we will never accept and everyone at the Club shares this view.

“We all need to get back to focusing on football but again my plans have been hampered as we have had to cancel a tour in the Highlands this weekend that would have helped us prepare for the season ahead.

“This is still Rangers Football Club and the supporters will continue to back us as they have always done. There will be difficult times ahead but I know with the support of our fans we can emerge stronger and rise to the challenge.

“Talks will continue next week and we all hope common sense will prevail to allow us to get back playing football.”

    Portsmouth staff face further redundancies
The administrators of Portsmouth have told staff at the financially-stricken club they face being made redundant.

They have also made it clear players must still be sold or accept lower wages, or the club will close down.

In June, Portpin agreed to complete its purchase of the club on condition the wage bill was reduced through player sales and compromise agreements.

But administrator Trevor Birch has so far been unable to achieve sufficient savings by this strategy alone.

“Under the terms of the Company Voluntary Arrangement that was agreed with creditors, Portpin agreed to complete its purchase of the club on the condition that the wage bill was reduced through player sales and compromise agreements,” said Birch.

    Pompey’s senior players
Portsmouth cannot afford to keep any of their eight contracted players – Tal Ben Haim, Greg Halford, Erik Huseklepp, Dave Kitson, Liam Lawrence, David Norris, Luke Varney, Kanu

“We have made progress in this respect over the past few weeks but there is still more that needs to be done if the club is to meet the pre-conditions for Portpin’s purchase.”

In February, Pompey made around 30 staff redundant including chief executive David Lampitt and the club face liquidation if they cannot reduce their playing staff further.

In total they have eight senior players left on the books and most of them will have to leave for the club to survive.

Those players are Tal Ben Haim, Greg Halford, Erik Huseklepp, Dave Kitson, Liam Lawrence, David Norris, Luke Varney and Kanu.

“Time is running out and, unless I can see a greater probability of player sales and compromises being completed in the near-term, the purchase will not go ahead and the club will have to close,” added Birch.

“We have spoken to all of the club’s staff and players and started a redundancy consultation period.

“I sincerely hope that we can complete the sale of the club and avoid the need for redundancies – and I will continue to do all I can to safeguard the future of the club – but I believe that staff need to be aware of the situation so that they have as much of an opportunity as possible to explore other options.

“This has been an incredibly difficult time for the staff, many of whom have loyally served the club for a number of years, and I recognise that it is extremely upsetting for them.

“This announcement is not in any way a reflection on them – in fact, I’m sure that we would not have got this far without their support.”
    ——————————————————————————————————————————–

So 30 players/staff went immediately – cutting costs to save a club and cut a deal? Ridiculous behaviour, who are these people? Don’t they know that without players portsmouth are finished, all that history, no local rivalry with southampton – in fact english football will be finished – I demand that the other clubs should be made to give them players eg southampton could hand over steve davis, he’s always keen to help a club in crisis!

  18. Hector says:

I can’t call on others to forego Scotland games, it’s up to each individuals own conscience. I’ve been an active Celtic supporter for over 40 years and a Scotland one just as long. I was in Mexico, Italy and France for the world cups and plenty other places besides…as it happens mostly with other Celtic supporters. Like the other Celtic fans commenting here I too have often had to live with the abuse of my own club’s players while supporting Scotland; though to be fair, in recent years, it is much lessened. (As a slight aside I remember standing at a game against Columbia in the late 80’s (I think) at Hampden behind a group of guys that shouted “F**king Jacobite scum” every time a Celtic player touched the ball…to this day I have no idea why they actually went along; other than to abuse Celtic players). However, personally, I can’t see me being back until there is a clear out at the top of Scottish football. I won’t bore you with the detailed reasons, it’s pretty self evident, in the end it’s the simplest and best way I have of expressing my dissatisfaction.

In my opinion, all the meetings and “agreements” with the SFA this week are just a smokescreen to allow Green to do a bit of finger pointing once it all falls apart. For whatever reason (personal safety?) he feels he must be seen to have tried to keep “rangers” playing football. However back in the real world of finance, his best chance of making money is to let the football side die. and start getting some value out of Ibrox and Murray Park. If he has decided to do that, he (and Whyte?) stand to make a load of money. Whereas a SFL3 club, with Ibrox overheads, is quite simply a money pit. Green needs 3rd division football like a hole in the head. And I am the only one who sees Green as a front man for Whyte and (say it softly) Sir David Murray?

If found guilty of the dual-contracts charges, these titles should be struck from the honours achieved by Rangers FC, a record of achievement that will cease in 2012. Your employer, Sevco Scotland, have no titles that can be removed from them, as they have no titles to start with.

Therefore, I repeat, what has it got to do with you?

When it is clear, and for most of us on here it has been for sometime, there will be nothing that will stop the improper registration of Rangers over many years. No ifs, buts, or maybes. It won’t affect Sevco, they are a new club anyway.

Ally should be throwing his weight (sorry) behind and focusing on rallying the Sevco troops from where ever he can amass the guns for hire for slugging it out in the third, beside Elbows and kicker Black. I always thought Black was a potential Rangers player, but in a mean way – and his game will probably suit the third more than the rest, other than Clugger McCullough.

I don’t expect McCoist to walk away from Sevco, more like Dr. David Banner, quietly hitching his way onwards til he turns green with rage again. I can hear the sad tinkling ivories of the Hulk theme in the background. More to be pitied than scorned.

I guess that’s what the ‘Don’t punish us anymore, we can’t take anymore’ is all about but unfortunately McCoist just comes across as ‘Don’t punish us, you won’t like us when we’re angry !’

    Once too often, Ally ?

so the shambolic SFA are allowing a situation where new Rangers could sell old Rangers players, where new Rangers can have old rangers history.

But New Rangers are not liable for old Rangers debts and new rangers could sell Lee Wallace, a player old rangers did not pay for.

you have to laugh at the sheer dysfunctional institution that is the SFA.

Correct me if i’m wrong. Isn’t doing a deal between the SFA and Newco and then referring back to the AT to rubberstamp. Not unlike a convict doing a deal with the court officials and then asking the jury to sign it off without deliberating.

Diamondtim, I hope were not back to the “old ways” and a ball has not even been struck.

So super is still shouting his mouth of about what dead club will or will not accept as a consequence of 10-12 yrs of corruption.
He refuses to see that the the sfa are doing him and rosemary’s baby a massive favor by ignoring every rule and regulation to get them into the sfl when they should have been chased and told to come back in 3 years and then only if a space was available.
And on this signing embargo being lifted,as they are still in admin surely they can’t sign anyone and can’t untill they come out of admin

  46. selfassessor says:

Remy Mc.Swain, whom I believe is a poster with reliable sources, has just posted on the KDS forum that Sevco will be taking a year’s holiday from football, or words to that effect.

That’ll be the same guy who argued for over a year on KDS that the hoons (copywrite acknowledged) wouldn’t go into administration?

  48. Smell the glove says:

The cheating hasn’t gone away. The SFA are still at it, only more openly, rubbing it in our faces. Newco claiming to be oldco but without the debt = total corruption. Corruption supported by the SFA. Don’t give them your money. The national team are dead to me.

  49. Norweigan Blue says:

Still unclear on Sevco “team name” for competing fairly in SFL3 and Cups?

As a NewClub they will need something that acknowledges historical links whilst also showing a corporate social responsible attitude is now taken more seriously in G51.

These are both key elements in any Brand Detoxification Strategy, if the NewClub is to survive and thrive in the longer term: Step forward The Taxus Rangers.
